Stepping back in time at Dalvay
Dalvay by the Sea Heritage Inn and Dining Room sits on Prince Edward Island's north shore in the middle of the National Park. Surrounded by beautifully manicured grounds filled with classy lawn chairs, hammocks, a croquet field, tennis courts and a gift shop, and facing the Atlantic Ocean and an endless sandy beach that stretches as far as the eye can see in either direction, it is a rather major understatement to say that Dalvay is a very special place.
Oozing old world class, the Inn was built in 1895 by Alexander MacDonald, a wealthy businessman and one-time president of Standard Oil Company. He named the house “Dalvay By The Sea” after his boyhood home in Scotland. Road to Avonlea fans and fans of the Anne of Green Gables movies produced by Sullivan Entertainment Inc. in the 1990s will be most familiar with Dalvay as the “White Sands Hotel.” Dalvay by the Sea has 25 guest rooms, all furnished in period antiques. There are no televisions, phones or radios in the guest rooms to encourage guests to truly unplug and relax. There are also 8 cottages on the property for larger groups that are looking for a more secluded experience.
Today Dalvay is a peaceful yet elegant getaway with easy access to the beach, walking and cycling trails, or simply a place to withdraw from the world to rest and rejuvenate.
Dalvay also has a fine-dining restaurant and an afternoon tea service that both run through the summer months. The afternoon tea service features a multi-tiered plate filled with house-made sweet and savoury treats, as well as a selection of Lady Baker's teas. After tea you can take a stroll along the beach, go for a bike ride or relax in the garden with a good book. It is the perfect way to unwind after a busy week.
This month we have two exciting things to share with you about Dalvay. The first is that we have a gift certificate for afternoon tea for one lucky blog reader. To enter just leave a comment below (it takes a little while for your comment to be processed so please do not be discouraged if you do not immediately see it below the post) telling us which of our teas you would order if you were to win afternoon tea at Dalvay. We will announce a winner on Tuesday, August 16th so that you have plenty of time to book your afternoon tea before the end of the month. Dalvay requests that guests make a 12-hour advance reservation.
The second thing we want to share with you is that Lady Baker will be hosting afternoon tea at Dalvay by the Sea on Sunday August 21st at 2.30pm, and she is inviting 9 other people to join her. Tickets are $35 tax included, and the deadline to book your seat is August 17th. Reservations can be made by calling us at 902-370-8327 or emailing katherine(at)ladybakersteatrolley(dot)com. Spaces are filling quickly, so if you would like to join us we recommend you give us a call soon. This promises to be a fun-filled afternoon of tea stories, laughter, friendship and delicious treats and tea served by the excellent staff at Dalvay. The afternoon tea service at Dalvay wraps up at the end of the month so if you haven't already made a reservation, we highly recommend making one before the end of the month. We promise that you will not be disappointed.
