Putting the TEA in TEAm!

Meeting up with the PEI Mud Men Rugby Team was, you might say, a little different kind of tea experience than Lady Baker's usual tea times. Off we went to a practice last evening to hydrate these guys. It was hot and they were sweat personified!

Green tea is considered one of the world's healthiest drinks and contains one of the highest amounts of antioxidants of any tea. It is made from unoxidized leaves and is one of the less processed types of tea (with white tea the least). It is growing in popularity in Canada amongst our athletes.

If you drink three or more cups of tea a day you might be doing your health more good than drinking plain water, say researchers from King's College, London, UK. This new study found, among other things, that the urban myth that tea dehydrates could not be further from the truth - tea hydrates as well as water does, say the researchers.

Green Tea just may be the best choice for athletes! Combined with honey (carbs), it makes an excellent drink for hydration and during vigorous exercise can delay mental fatigue and improve cognitive function, mood, motor skill performance, and perceived exertion better than drinking the same volume of water.

For hydration and carbs, try this simply delicious and invigorating iced tea that we made for the Mud Men Rugby Team. We used our Tropical Green Tea but a plain Sencha or any other premium loose leaf green tea is recommended.

Boil 1 litre of water and let cool 5 minutes before pouring onto 1 tbsp of the tea. Steep 5 minutes. Strain the tea and stir in 2 tbsp honey. Add ¼ teaspoon of salt if desired. Refrigerate till cold before pouring into your drink bottle. Shake well before sipping during your exercise.

Here's to good health! Here's to keeping the TEA in TEAm!
