Mothering
I've been a mom for 42 years! Wow! Amazingly, I'm still alive and standing strong! Forty-two years ago I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
When I was about ten, I remember having the following conversation with my Mom in the kitchen.
"Mom, I can't decide what I want to be when I grow up. Some days I want to be a teacher. Some days I think I should be a nurse. But maybe I should be a missionary. What do you think?"
The answer I heard went something like this:
"Kathy dear, all those professions would suit you and be very rewarding. But if you should be a mother, you'll be all three!"
It is very likely at this moment, she was making me a cup of children's tea, but I can't attest to the accuracy of that. We had a lot of children's tea in those days. It was Mom's way of making me feel grown up!
So I eventually became a teacher, nurse and missionary, worked to the bone 24/7! I dare anyone to say I didn't work! Full-time motherhood is a very real commitment. I was categorized as a stay-at-home mom and found myself sometimes, I admit, wishing I had a 'real' job where I might be more appreciated.
At the time of this blog, I have 4 daughters and a son between the ages of 30 and 42. I feel extremely fortunate that they survived their childhood (it must have been because of all the tea and toast we shared together!). It's quite an accomplishment actually, considering that they are alive and well despite an emergency appendectomy, concussions, a near drowning, a broken arm, sprained ankles...need I go on? I love them deeply.
I am also one of five children who gets to see my eighty-eight year old mom most days. She too was and still is a teacher, nurse and missionary. She still makes a great cup of tea and she still is my biggest encourager!
Whether you are spending this Mother's Day mothering or being mothered, I hope you all have a truly beautiful day appreciating this important relationship!
