If music be the food of love...
I love going to The Mount taking afternoon tea, music and often a poem or story to share with many of the residents who have been joining me on the last Thursday of each month. This past week's theme was a Sing-a-long Tea Party and what fun we had! My guests of honour were Gary and Marcus, two friends who realized several years ago that they could sing and play guitars and share their joy in music. They volunteered to spend an hour while I served tea. The several ladies who came to help perhaps enjoyed it more than the residents! We heard jazz, blues, country and an old faithful, You are My Sunshine.
Toes and fingers were tapping. Hans Christian Andersen wrote "Where words fail, music speaks." Plato said, "Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything."
How perfect to combine music and tea! Both music and tea dispel gloom, you know! A quote by Milton on tea goes like this, "One sip of this will bathe the drooping spirits in delight, beyond the bliss of dreams."
I served a very popular tea that the market crowd loves, our Cream Earl Grey and our Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe from Assam, India. We had 40 guests so it seemed I was running back to the kitchen to refill the 4 teapots that I brought more times than usual! I also had a musical note cookie cutter and so shortbread 'quarter notes' dipped in chocolate accompanied the tea poured into fine china tea cups.
Our Sing-a-long Tea Party marks the last at The Mount until October. Our summer months here on Prince Edward Island are full to the brim with wholesale and retail sales, Wednesday and Saturday market days, weddings, conferences and quick trips in the summer sun. It will fly by, this short season we call 'summer.' Then once again, we can look forward to tea times at The Mount Continuing Care Community.
