Lady Baker's Tea Turns 10!

I am not one to choose a roller coaster ride at the fair. I generally head for the merry-go-round. My favourite ride at Disneyland was 'It's a Small World, After All' where, sitting in a little rowboat, I listened to that sweet gentle song as I floated from country to country, watching all the figures singing in harmony and emanating a sense of community.

So why on earth would I think that starting my own business would be just the journey I should embark upon? Little did I know that I had just stepped onto the platform to get on the roller coaster!

Though sometimes I feel I am hanging on for dear life, it has been worth the ride.

For the record, I believe that tea is connected to survival when one looks at the history of the beverage. Tea has meaning. Tea is a strong and fortifying plant origin and has been the source of many mystical, spiritual and healing experiences.

Sharing tea time with the elderly and home-bound started when I was a child and continued on when I was a young mother. It was the catalyst that spurred on Lady Baker's Tea Trolley in 2001 as a sole proprietorship in North Carolina.

Fascination with the tea product itself led me to pursue incorporating and educating myself and others by acquiring a space at the Charlottetown Farmers' Market which opened its booth to me on December 1, 2007.

I was an Islander returning to my roots after 35 years away and embarking, or so I thought, on a small, peaceful and simple enterprise.

Over these ten years, I have experienced many of the difficult issues that present themselves in small business on a very small island. I have also experienced the deep satisfaction of seeing a little dream grow, evolve and finally take on its own amazing form!

For this I can only give credit to the wonderful community of tea drinkers who have shared this heart-felt journey of discovery, friendship, desire for good health and the comfort that this elusive beverage mysteriously brings to our lives.

As a thank you to everyone who has been with me from the beginning as well as to all the newer customers who have joined and continue to join our community every day, I am giving a 12 Teas of Christmas package away! To enter all you need to do is leave a comment below this post telling me where you live and either how you first encountered Lady Baker's Tea, or a positive experience you have had with my tea. I will announce the winner in my next blog post on December 16th! I look forward to reading your stories!

In celebration of 10 successful years in business, and in anticipation of many more to come, I raise my cup to you all!

I first bought your London Fog & Chocolate Mint tea when I was on vacation in Canada & visiting St. Andrews 2 years ago. I fell in love with them & then wanted more, so I began ordering your teas on your web site. I have had several girls tea parties at my home and have shared your teas with all my friends & family and they love them as well. I congratulate you on your ten years in business and am very grateful that you opened your tea company because they have brought me great pleasure and have given me the opportunity to create wonderful memories with the people I love. I wish you continued success and many happy “tea times”.

I’m from Oakville, Ontario. I was I. Charlottetown recently for a conference and happened upon your teas in a quaint little gift shop. The cinnamon tea is now my go to whenever I feel a cold coming on. I just placed my first of what I’m sure will be many orders!

Hi…my comment posted before I was finished. Now that I spend Sept and Oct on the island I make sure to order my tea as soon as I arrive. My favourite is the peppermint tea…i have a cup after dinner most nights. Next is the island strawberry. I have tried a few of your teas and they are all so fresh and fragrant. Thank you for putting out such a wonderful product…congratulations on 10 years!

I live in Charlottetown and have known Lady Bakers family for years. What a pleasure it was to finally meet her and get to know her and her company. Love your lemon curd and your tea goes to California every Christmas to my family. Merry Christmas and here’s to another 10.
